Tired, Trendy & Timeless: Wedding Cakes

Besides the fact that the chances of your wedding guests staying the whole night is much greater when a cake follows dinner — you just HAVE to have a cake. You just HAVE to! It’s not FAIR if you don’t! MOM!!!! She forgot the cake! Ahem, I seem to have regressed here. The point is, people expect cake. And, seeing how EVERYONE likes cake, I suggest you have it. Check out our favorite (and not so favorite) wedding cakes in this installment of Tired, Trendy & Timeless.

Happy Friday! I envy brides that get to throw a totally-femmy-glitter-orgasmic-sparkle-fest wedding. I went ahead and decided to marry a man who actually had an opinion on our wedding, so naturally all things gold, pink and sparkly were vetoed. His loss, OBVIOUSLY. Tired, Trendy & Timeless:
The Grand Departure

I love the idea of a grand departure — actually, I’m kind of obsessed with it … probably because I didn’t have one. We, (in our NON-infinite wisdom) decided to stick around until the bitter end, and even attended a messy and drunken “after party” at a nearby hotel (it took me about .5 seconds to change out of my wedding dress right into sweat pants).

If I’d have known I would be THAT exhausted, I would have made a grand departure an absolute priority. Check out these Tired, Trendy & Timeless departures to help you plan the send-off of the century.

Bridesmaid Gift Roundup

Today I pay homage to some of the most important people in your wedding – your bridesmaids. After all, bridesmaids wear many different hats. They listen to all your wedding woes and they wear whatever you ask them (and some even PAY for their dress, too!). And after gaining 4 pounds of pre-wedding stress weight, the best bridesmaids will even stitch you into your dress after your zipper pops (all the while reassuring you that these things happen, and that you are, indeed, NOT fat). Ahem … not that I speak from personal experience or anything.

Now, don’t you think THAT deserves a bomb(dot)com thank you gift? If I had known there would be an emergency “open seam dress surgery” I would have bought her the moon (and probably been a little less glutonous at our cake tasting … but I digress).

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite gifts to say “Thanks, girl. If it wasn’t for you, I would have had to get married in a Gwar T-shirt.”

Trend: Unique wedding registries

Wedding registry ideas

Perhaps you already have all the pots, pans, towels, dishes you’ll ever need in life. You’re not alone.

Many couples are entering marriage with a household full of stuff, especially if they are living together or are well past the post-grad ramen phase of their lives.

That  also means the traditional wedding registry to help you outfit your new life together isn’t necessarily needed. So instead of trying to figure out if those porcelain salt and pepper shakers will ever be used, consider these cool wedding registries instead:

Foodie Registry: Love eating out? Choose from a bunch of restaurants and let your guests help you eat your way through your town.

Hatch My House: This registry allows your guests to help you save toward a down payment, renovations or décor for your future home. A cool feature is that your guests can see your dream house from the front door to the bedroom and purchase a certain part of your house, like a door or window.

Honeyluna: Can’t afford a honeymoon? Perhaps your guests can help you out with a dream vacation. Select your destination and guests can not only contribute to your plane tickets and lodging but extras including spa packages, a romantic meal or day excursions.

I Do Foundation: If you want your wedding day to focus on giving to others, then consider a charity registry. This website allows your guests to feel good about giving back to charities that you hold near and dear to your heart.

Trend: The unofficial officiant

the wedding officiant

A few weeks ago, The New York Times published a trend article about how more couples are asking friends and family to officiate their wedding. I really love the idea of having someone close to you officiate a wedding especially if you aren’t keen on having a religious official marry you. Friends and family tend to know you the best, make you feel comfortable and can add personalized stories to your ceremony.

The article names a few ways that people get ordained to perform ceremonies, such as the popular Universal Life Church website.

My sister had an in-between option for their wedding. Instead of asking their friend to get ordained as a minister, my sister and her groom headed to the courthouse to get officially hitched by a judge. Later, they asked a friend to “act” as the minister during their ceremony in front of family and friends. I like this option because it is black and white. There is no real sketchiness about whether everything is official, plus it eased the couple’s jitters before the bigger ceremony.

However, I can see the downside of this in-between option. Getting married by a judge can be very unromantic. And you may not like the idea of having to think of your wedding day with family and friends as an act rather than a real ceremony.

What do you think, brides? Who do you prefer to marry you – a clergyman, an ordained friend or this in-between option?

Trend: Lending Libraries

Wedding lending libraries

Last September, I was photographing a wedding out in the country and they had just the right touches — vintage-looking dishes, rustic desserts and a little path to a hill with a wooden sign pointing “Wedding!”

At one point during the celebration, the bride turned to me and said, “You write about budget weddings, right? I’ve got a tip for you.” And then Jasmine proceeded to blow my mind. “We borrowed all this stuff.”

Turns out it’s a real thing, although not quite as widespread as I’d hoped. Here in Portland (figures, right? You’ve all seen Portlandia) there is not one but a few lending libraries where you can check out kitchen gadgets or loads of place settings, glasses and tablecloths — even decor items.

I think it’s a brilliant idea, and it’s a lucky tip for Portland Metro-area brides and an even hotter tip for anyone in a different city wanting to start their own. Sounds like a fun and easy way to share, recycle and reduce waste — and you could use them again and again, for big holiday meals, an annual canning experiment or to test out a pressure cooker.

Timeless Trend: Non-floral centerpieces

Budget Wedding Ideas

No flowers at your wedding? That may have sounded absurd a few decades ago, but nowadays, having a non-floral wedding is a common occurrence. Plus, non-floral centerpieces have evolved from the ever-popular pillar candle to ideas that are so creative and fun that you and your guests won’t miss the roses.

Here’s why we love this trend:

It can be cost-effective. A floral centerpiece can range anywhere from $25 up to hundreds of dollars. However, by being a bit resourceful and imaginative, you can make centerpieces from materials found at dollar or craft stores, cutting down your décor budget considerably.

Personalization comes easy. Create a centerpiece with elements that fit your style and personality. Love books? Build a bibliophile centerpiece by stacking your favorite hardcover books on the table. World travelers? Use mementos from your trips. Another bonus is that you can customize each table so it’s unique, encouraging guests to mingle while checking out each table’s centerpiece.

It’s a two for one deal. Centerpieces can be beautiful and functional. Use a fruit centerpiece for your guests to nosh on later in the evening. Or decorate and stack your party favor boxes in a pyramid shape. (Make sure to tell your guests that the centerpieces are for the eating and taking so they feel comfortable picking apart the table.)

What are your favorite ideas for non-floral centerpieces?

Trend: RSVP online
vs. snail mail?

online rsvp print rsvp

I recently just received my first RSVP online-only wedding invitation. And I have to say, it was kind of nice.

I do see the benefits of using an online RSVP for a wedding. It saves money and trees since you don’t have to deal with printed RSVP cards, envelopes and stamps. And with more couples directing guests to their wedding websites to convey travel and party details, it seems more natural for guests to respond electronically since all the other event information is online.

However, as a girl who still loves sending out thank you cards through the good old postal service, I wonder if the online RSVP takes away from the tradition of wedding invitations. I love the idea of sending out a cohesive and formal invitation suite that includes a printed RSVP card and a stamped pre-addressed envelope. Plus, printed RSVP cards ensure that your non-savvy technological guests can respond, like your dear old granny or the eccentric uncle who lives on a commune.

What do you think, brides? Are you all about directing your guests online to RSVP for the big day or do you prefer the response via the old-fashioned stamped envelope?

Trend: Bold Bridal Shoes

Budget Wedding Statement Shoes

SHOES. Do you guys love shoes? I’m a sucker for them, especially in bright, fun colors. The idea of wearing a statement shoe under a big white wedding gown makes me swoon, and not just because I wore red sparkly Dorothy shoes under my own wedding dress four and a half years ago!

I love a statement bridal shoe hidden underneath a big, puffy gown like a fun secret, or paired with a shorter gown and shown off with pride. Either way, you can’t go wrong with something fun, colorful and dripping with personality. Make a statement!

A Wedding Setting: Tangled

Tangled wedding inspiration board

I love this movie. Correction: I freakin’ love this movie. I love this movie an entirely inappropriate amount for my age. I mean, she’s a princess who defends herself with a cast iron skillet. That. Is. Rad. Way better than Cinderella.  In every other Disney movie, the prince and princess first meet when the silly princess gets herself into trouble and he saves her. Or, even better, they just LOOK at each other and know their love is forever. Rapunzel sees her prince break into her tower and knocks the bastard out. Twice. That is my kind of princess.

And on one of the most special days of your life, wouldn’t you just LOVE to walk down the isle with a heap of Rapunzel’s confidence and attitude? She wouldn’t steer you wrong. Use today’s Wedding Setting as inspiration for your Tangled themed wedding!

Trend: Wedding Flash Sales

Wedding flash sales

Wedding flash sales

OK, you’re getting married. And you’re a savvy budget bride — I mean, you read MarryThis!, after all — but sometimes you need to splurge. You need some swoon-worthy wedding shoes or the gown of your dreams (and it’s WAAAY out of your price range). Enter one of my favorite features of this great thing we call the Internet — the flash sale. You’ve probably seen them for home decor, accessories and clothes. But you can score some great wedding deals, too!

Here are some of our favorite spots to find some smashing deals:

The Aisle New York: All bridal flash sales, all the time — this classy go-to will give you loads of designer options in the wedding world.

Gilt: Gilt Groupe was one of the original sample sale havens, and lucky for those to-be-wed, they have a bridal event featuring gowns, accessories and lingerie every few months. Get on their email list so you know when the next one starts.

Moda Operandi: Their occasional bridal events will get you, but it’s the amazing jewelry (and the site’s cool illustrations) that will keep you coming back all the time. Some of those baubles would make great bridesmaid gifts!

Jetsetter: Don’t forgot the honeymoon! This travel sale site (from Gilt) offers luxurious, honeymoon-worthy destinations, hotels and trips at a hefty discount. Recommend friends and get a $100 travel credit that you can use toward your getaway.

100 Layer Cake Pop-Up Shop: Brought to you by the incredible ladies behind the 100 Layer Cake blog, this pop-up shop goes beyond fashion and accessories. You can find your invitations, book your photographer and score other loot for your wedding at a discount. Just act fast. As with all of these, they’re usually over in a flash.

Trend: Popping the question to your bridesmaid

bridesmaids

She is your standing weekend brunch and shopping date. She’s the friend who held your hair back when you got sick aka “having too many margaritas.” She’s the first person you called when you met him and who you called immediately after you said yes.

So your future bridesmaid deserves some extra thoughtfulness when you request her presence next to you at the altar. Although she’d be perfectly happy if you just called and asked, playing up this special question will win you brownie points.

Here’s some fun ideas on how to ask your friend to be a bridesmaid:

  • Send her flowers at work or at home with a special card
  • Invite all of your bridesmaids to a meal and place a “will you?” card at their place setting
  • If your bridesmaid lives far away, send her a note with a framed photo with both of you together
  • Attach a tag that “pops” the question with a bottle of champagne

What other creative ideas have you seen for asking a bridesmaid?
